Gathering Information-Notes

v  The majority of Americans have confidence in our officers
v  The statements of racism are over exaggerated because there are not too many white officers on the force
v  At many times it is primarily Hispanic and African American
v  Some of the problem is coming from Community Policing
v  That is when citizens take the job into their own hands
v  The police of Los Angeles and are caught up in scandal
v  “Rampart police are accused of stealing drugs, falsifying reports, framing people, and abusing unarmed suspects” page 8
v  “About 200 lawsuits have been filed against the city of Los Angeles” page 8
v  Over 100 of those criminal convictions have been over turned because the police usually deal with problem citizens they have developed an us verses them mentality.

Gathering Information-Notes

·         Mexican immigrants are victims of racial brutality in California
·         There are also reports of brutality against African Americans in California
·         “NAACP notes that between 1976 and 1987, about 1,800 blacks and 3,000 whites were killed by police”
·         Many of those may have been for reasons of self-defense
·         Judges in some areas are corrupt against the police
·         They accuse some of them for doing things without probable cause
·         “Baer ruled that fleeing suspects do not give the necessary “probable cause” to search the defendants vehicle”
·         Even though the officers found $4 million dollars’ worth of drugs in the vehicle
·         The judge then proceeded to throw out the evidence
·         I highly disagree with this action though they may not have had “probable cause” the evidence still stands that it was the defendants drugs and they should be punished for it

Book:  Jude by Kate Morgenroth

2.        “Police Brutality”
3.        “Police in Los Angeles”

Police Corruption

One of the main issues in Jude by Kate Morgenroth was police corruption in cities.
According to an article I found in the CBS Interactive Business Network, Los Angeles has one of the worst police corruption problems in the United States. After cities like New York and Waco came forward with counts of police corruption and police brutality, multiple allegations has resulted in what they call “the worst police scandal since the 1930s. One officer in particular was a center of a major account, Officer Rafael Perez. He was report of stealing $1 million worth of cocaine from the evidence room. The court lightened his sentence when he told them about another incident when he and another officer “handcuffed an unarmed teenager, shot him in the head, planted a rifle near his body, and then claimed it as self-defense.” The victim, Javier Ovando, then served 23 years in prison after being paralyzed from the assault. I got this article from www.bnet.org. In my opinion I find my topic interesting to read about although I do not agree with the police in the article. The unnecessary violence of the American cities should be helped and hopefully stopped in some cities.

Summer Reading

My summer reading was Jude by Kate Morgenroth. We had to answer some questions and here are some of the answers.

The main character was a troubled boy named Jude whose father was a drug user/dealer. As a result of this, Jude was a very hateful and angry teenager who never felt that he fit in.

Jude’s father is killed by two men forcing him to go live with his estranged mother who he finds out is the local DA. Jude frames himself on drug charges with the help of his mother’s boyfriend, Henry, to help boost his mother’s career but, instead of him going to prison for three months, like the boyfriend said, he was put away for five years. Jude is released from prison and gets Henry to admit that Jude was framed on the drug charges that he lied to Jude about what would happen if he admitted to the false charges, and that Henry knew his whereabouts during his childhood and kept that information from his mother.

Considering the challenges that Jude faces during the story, I believe the author is trying to tell the readers that you always have a choice and that you should think about your options fully before you make a decision that will ultimately affect the rest of your life.

As a result of Jude going to jail on the false drug charges, his self-esteem and confidence was diminished even further than it was to start with. Also, because he was in prison he would always be considered an ex-con which would cause him to have a hard time getting a job and living in society. Since he had to live with fear and anger while in prison, these are issues that will probably plague him for the rest of his life. Because of the deceit he experienced with Henry, he will more than likely continue to have issues trusting people.

At the beginning of the story, the police are questioning Jude about what happened to his father. Jude tells the police that his father was “skimming too much from his shipments.” When asked was the shipments were, Jude tells them that his father was dealing in heroin and cocaine. At this point, the reader knows that the death of Jude’s father is going to completely change Jude’s life and that now everyone he knows will find out that his father was a drug dealer. The reader is caught up in feeling sorry for Jude and wondering whether the men that killed his father will come back and kill him.

After Jude is seen with another boy buying drugs, Henry tells Jude that he must frame himself in order to save his mother’s career. Although he knows that she is going to be disappointed in him, he knows that he has to do this for her. It is obviously the most difficult decision he has ever had to make, but does it out of love and respect for his mother. His hope is that by showing people that she doesn’t show favoritism she would be the best candidate for mayor. In the end, he is sure that once his mother finds out what he has sacrificed for her, he will earn her complete love and respect.

Dear Jude,

My name is Konnor D and I attend John Carroll High School. I enjoyed reading about you in the story Jude. Over the summer, I did many things. I went to Bush Gardens, Virginia, and had a lot of fun there. I also went to New Jersey to see the ocean before I had to go back to school. I also went to see a lot of friends over the summer. I played some rugby over the summer too. I am not sure if you want to hear this seeing how you were in prison.

I thought that the story was very good and well thought out. The way you handled yourself in prison was inspiring. You made sure to protect yourself and still meet some people who were not all bad. Then when you got out and made Harry confess to all the things that he had done, that took guts. You faced so much betrayal and yet you still had energy to keep on going, but you had to because that was the only way to get your mothers respect.

I thought that the story was written in a very informative style. I could feel like I was in your story, like I was in your life, and it felt terrible. All of your injustice and hurt I could feel too. That may seem insensitive, but it’s true. The author also described the places you saw very well. Your apartment, the prison, and the half-way house they were all written as if she had seen them herself and that past into the book.

So what happened after you got accepted into college? Did you become an attorney like you had hoped? Or in college did you end up choosing a different profession? On a different topic I think you handled all those prisoners well by fighting them off even though you were getting sicker every day in solitary. The one thing that was amazing to me was that you actually gave up your life for your mother by going to prison to help her career.

I think police corruption is a real issue in a modern society. Often you hear about police that are taking drugs from people who they are supposed to be preventing to sell drugs. They are putting innocent people in prison just to save their own career. They are also putting the innocent in prison just because of race, religion, or ethnicity. Now I’m not saying that all police officers are like this or do these things, but some do and it’s a real problem.

Now I hope you get this letter and I don’t think you will respond seeing how now you are on your own and free, but I hope you will. Tell me what it is like being free and able to do whatever you want after being locked up for five years. I hope you respond and if not have a good life.

Sincerely,

Konnor D
